Despite being fussier than the French frills on a fancy flummery,* I do occasionally find things I like.
Here’s what tickled my fancy recently:
Books:
Elizabeth Jane Howard’s short story collection, Three Miles Up and Other Strange Stories. In particular, the final story in that collection, “Mr Wrong,” is excellent. I’d read it years ago, and it had been lingering in the back of my mind since. Most of the stories are ghostly or “odd“. “Mr Wrong” ends the collection on a wonderfully nasty note!
Martin Amis’ Money jumped out at me, while cramming our books into our few remaining bookshelves. The German title Gierig means “Greedy”, which sums up the plot nicely. Set – and written in – the 1980s, the fashions might have changed, but the prose is still on fire!
TV:
Back in Georgia we binged sitcom Stath Lets Flats about a hopeless letting agent/realtor. Very silly, but the characters are excellent and adorable. You’ll want to stick around for all three seasons to see what happens to them.
The same goes for Everyone Else Burns, about a zealous family waiting for doomsday to come to their part of suburbia.
On a more serious note, Tip Toe was excellently tense, about what follows when a gay man gives his neighbour his spare key, “just in case…”
Here in Berlin, we’re re-watching DVDs while we wait for our internet. Jeeves and Wooster is my pick. The one starring Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry. I love how it differs from the books by jumbling up all the events to create new stories out of them. I think it’s how I’d like them to film my Alumière adventures, if anyone asks.
But before you get stuck into all of that, make sure you’re up to date with my dark, strange and fantastic history shorts on YouTube.
I’m pretty proud of the most recent one.
Detailing the hidden history of garden shows during the Civil War, the story really goes with a bang…
